Working with the Institute of Clinical Leadership at Warwick Medical School, ORCNI developed a programme to support Specialist Registrars in 'stepping up' to their role as consultants in the NHS. The role of the Consultant in the NHS demands as never before a breadth of understanding of the whole health system, a commitment to service improvement and a requirement to offer leadership to others through multi professional team working.
The passage from trainee to clinical leader is one of the most significant professional and personal life events that doctors will experience.
The programme commenced in January 2006 and has been recently updated to incorporate the Medical Leadership Competency Framework and has been highly regarded by participants. Approximately 600 SpR's have undertaken the programme to date.
This integrated programme is provided in two modules of two and three days approximately four weeks apart with individual and group working, including the development of a business case and pitching of the case in the 'Dragons Den'
